Transit-Time Difference Principle

The Sonic Driver range of clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters measure according to the Transit-Time Difference Principle. This measurement method exploits the fact that the speed of an ultrasonic signal depends on the flow velocity of the material, such as a fluid in a pipe through which it is passing. Similar to swimming against the current, an ultrasonic signal moves slower against the flow than when in the flow direction. A transit-time difference can thus be measured and this allows the flowmeter to calculate the average flow velocity based on the propagation paths of the ultrasonic signals.

Our flowmeter’s carry out flow profile correction to obtain an accurate average flow velocity over the cross-section of the pipe – which is proportional to the volume flow.

Measurement is maintained even in the case of solids or gaseous entrainments up to a threshold of 10% by volume.

Since the flowmeters transducers are clamped onto the outside of the pipe the measurement is non-invasive, requires no shutdown for installation, causes no pressure loss, and requires no cutting or welding of pipes. Neither the flowmeter or its transducers are exposed to any wear, tear or contact with the fluid inside the pipe.
